Evolution has provided the brain with a natural capacity for language, but none for arithmetic or mathematics. However, certain brain cells - neurons - can be harnessed to meet new needs through repetitive experiences or practicing what is to be learnt. This is usually achieved through repeated doing. Hence, "Practice makes perfect!"

The same principle can be applied to learning arithmetic. To this end, dedicated manipulative resources have been developed to help pupils learn the basic processes of arithmetic - adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing - by doing or practicing.

SUMDIAL 10s have been used since 1997 to produce much better number attainments. It is now believed this is because they:

  • Model well the basic arithmetic processes (+, -, x, ÷)
  • Incorporate a number line
  • Include the Arabic number symbols from 0 to 10
  • Are constrained in how they can be used
  • Are 'pupil friendly'!
